GALVESTON - Chuck Norris rarely leaned back in his seat or slouched Thursday night as he watched the progress of the Central Middle School Kickstart Karate program in Galveston.
The 72-year-old master of martial arts, acting and personal fitness attended the belt ceremony, and Galveston was beside itself over his presence.
Mayor Joe Jaworski said he skipped a Galveston City Council meeting to present Norris with a plaque commemorating his visit.
"We told him we wanted to name it 'Chuck Norris Day' in Galveston, but he wanted to keep the focus on the youth," Jaworski said.
Instead, Galveston deemed May 10 "Kickstart Kids Day."
"I know a lot of you came to see Chuck Norris today, but you've got to remember that today, Chuck Norris came to see you," Central Middle School Kickstart Kids Instructor Gustavo Perez said.
Galveston Independent School District Superintendent Larry Nichols also attended the ceremony at the Central Middle School gymnasium, which was packed by hundreds of supporters of the karate program and its founder, Norris.
Norris presented more than 100 belts to Galveston karate students who received their new ranks. Marcus Johnson received a black belt, Wendy Carreon, Victoria Valastro and Ryan Cazar were presented red belts, Jose Oglguin was promoted to green belt, and dozens of other students made the jump to the blue, orange, purple and gold belts.
Norris, who starred in the television series "Walker, Texas Ranger" from 1993 to 2001, gained a renewed boost of popularity in recent years with the viral "Chuck Norris Facts," fictitious statements mocking his extraordinary exploits and abilities.
Much to the surprise of several students, Norris wasn't hardly as rugged or personable as they had imagined.
"I thought he'd be bigger," one student blurted out after the ceremony.
Norris and his wife, Gena, were closely surrounded by personal security details throughout the evening.
Through one security guard, Norris declined to comment on his attendance at the ceremony or the program, which has graduated more than 70,000 students from its 43 different schools since it was founded in 1992.
Norris briefly addressed the crowd in a motivational speech.
"I was a nonathlete, and I became a world champion," Norris said. "I was extremely shy, but I put it all on the line in my films. If I can overcome those handicaps, anything that you might have can be comparable to what I've been able to overcome."

20th Century Fox Entertainment will release on Blu-ray three action films starring Chuck Norris: Joseph Zito's Missing in Action (1984), Lance Hool's Missing In Action 2: The Beginning (1985), and Menahem Golan's The Delta Force (1986). The three films, which will street on June 5th, will be available for purchase exclusively at Wal-Mart.

Back in January there was a kerfuffule of fan annoyance over reports that, at the behest of Chuck Norris, Sylvester Stallone was aiming the Expendables sequel at a PG-13 certificate from the MPAA. AICN however, picked up rumblings from Stallone a couple of weeks ago that an R-rating was back on the table for Expendables 2. And speaking to Empire over the weekend, Dolph Lundgren confirmed that he's been hearing the same thing.
"I heard that it's now R again," says Dolph. "Stallone's basic setting is to make it very violent. That's just in his personality, and if it was me I would do the same. I guess the producers figure they can make another $50m if it's PG-13, and if it was my money I might say the same thing! But I think for the fans, if it's tougher it's better."
Chuck had apparently complained about the R, saying that he "doesn't make films like that anymore" and earning some concessions from the production. But, Dolph reveals, it's actually a moot point for Norris, who has his own unique way of making his films accessible anyway.
"Chuck likes to re-cut all of his films before he shows them to his kids," grins Dolph. "He told me he has his own editor. So it's irrelevant! He could make it a G-rating if he wanted to!"
We'd prefer to believe that Chuck Norris is so tough, he shoots the offending frames right out of the film with an AK47.
Expendables 2 of course, stars Jason Statham, Bruce Willis, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jet Li, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Randy Couture, Terry Crews and Liam Hemsworth alongside Stallone, Norris and Lundgren. It's directed by Simon West, and is out in the UK this summer.

Chuck Norris, martial artist and actor best known for 1990s television series "Walker, Texas Ranger," endorsed Newt Gingrich for president Friday.
"We believe Newt's experience, leadership, knowledge, wisdom, faith and even humility to learn from his failures (personal and public) can return America to her glory days," Norris wrote in a column for conservative website World Net Daily, speaking for him and his wife, Gena. "And he is the best man left on the battlefield who is able to outwit, outplay and outlast Obama and his campaign machine."
Norris also spoke kindly of Ron Paul during a radio interview in May, calling him the most "honest" politician in Washington. But he wrote that he believes his Gingrich is the candidate who best answers a series of 10 questions "to find our next president" he had asked in a previous column.
Norris's list of requirements included commitment to the Constitution, leadership ability, moral fortitude, electability, fiscal prudence and demonstrated "regard for human life."
Norris wrote, "For my wife, Gena, and I, we sincerely believe former Speaker Newt Gingrich is the answer to most of those questions and deserves our endorsement and vote."
He went on to credit Rick Perry, who dropped his bid for the presidency on Thursday, for leading the rally behind Gingrich.
"We agree with our friend and governor of the great state of Texas, Rick Perry, when he suspended his campaign and endorsed Gingrich, that Newt 'has the heart of a conservative reformer,' " Norris wrote.
It was a day of big-name endorsements for Gingrich, who also touted a nod from President Reagan's son Michael at a campaign event in South Carolina on Friday.
Within the past week, Gingrich has taken the lead in polls of likely voters in the state, which holds its GOP primary on Saturday.

Chuck : "In "Expendables 2", they had a lot of hard language in there that prevent young people from going to see it, and I said I don't do movies like that. I might of did them in the past, I didn't do it in those TV series. I said if you can't take out all the language, hardcore language, you know... I can't do it. So they did, and they made it a PG-13 film so kids can go see it."
